A text RPG is a role-playing game played entirely in writing: the game describes the world in prose, and you act by typing what your character does. No graphics engine, no button prompts. Reading is the graphics, and that is exactly why the genre survives: words can render anything, a collapsing star, a lie at a dinner table, a city where magic needs a license, at zero cost. A text based RPG made you imagine more in 1995 than most engines could show you, and that has not changed.
What has changed is who runs the game. For most of the genre's history, someone had to write every room, every response, every outcome ahead of time. Now an AI Game Master can improvise all of it: it reads your action in plain language, decides what happens, narrates the result, and carries the consequences forward. Auferet is that kind of text RPG. It tracks your character, your items, the people you have met and what they think of you, and it keeps a persistent record of the world so a long campaign stays consistent instead of drifting.
A real session, recorded
Your keyboard is the character sheet
The road stretches thin through the thick pines, and the dying light of dusk paints the canopy in long, jagged shadows. Your hand rests on the pommel of your sword, the leather grip worn smooth by years of use, as the merchant's cart creaks rhythmically ahead of you. A low, guttural growl drifts from the brush to your left, and yellow eyes blink in the deepening gloom.
> step between the merchant and the wolves, blade out
The blade sings as you draw it, the cold iron catching the last of the fading light. As you plant your feet and level your gaze at the lead predator, its hackles rise, but your unwavering stance and the sharp steel cow it. With a low, frustrated yelp, the beast turns, its pack tailing it back into the suffocating shadows of the pines.
> shout at him to drop the box and count what I have left
The merchant pulls the reins hard, his face drained of color as he stares at you, trembling. He slowly lowers the iron-bound chest to the road, his voice thin and panicked. "I-I don't understand, traveler! We're supposed to be getting this to safety, not stopping here!"
Recorded on 2026-09-10 on the free-tier model: a fresh account, the seed line "I'm a hired blade guarding a merchant's cart on a forest road at dusk, and wolves are coming out of the trees", then the two commands above typed in. The Game Master's lines are cut to their first sentences here; the whole exchange, every word, is published as a JSON file.
Forty years of the genre
Three eras of the text based RPG
| MUDs (online multiplayer worlds) | Parser adventures | AI text RPG (Auferet) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who writes the world | Builders, hand-crafted rooms | One designer, in advance | A Game Master model, as you play |
| What you can type | Fixed command set | Verbs the parser knows | Anything in plain language |
| Other players | Shared server, always on | Solo | Solo or multiplayer, four modes |
| Between sessions | The server remembers | Save files | Persistent world memory |

What playing one is like
Built like an RPG, not a chat
Your character, held
Who you are, what you carry, what you have done. The game tracks it in structured libraries instead of hoping the model recalls it.
Rules when you want them
Freeform storytelling by default. Dedicated 5e and Pathfinder 2e modes bring character sheets, dice, and system rules when you want crunch.
A campaign that survives
The deciding feature of any AI-run game. Auferet keeps your world in persistent memory, so scene two hundred still agrees with scene one.
Multiplayer, four ways
Host-only, turn-based, free-for-all, or a shared world where every player has their own Game Master thread and nobody waits for a turn.
Your world, if you have one
Upload notes or a worldbook as PDF or text and the Game Master plays inside your canon, or describe a setting in one line and let it build.
Free means playable
10 free credits every day, with the full memory system included. Run a real campaign before you decide anything. Unlimited starts at $10/mo.
Why words still win
The case for playing in text
A text RPG asks more of you than a video game and gives more back. Because nothing is rendered, nothing is off the table: you can bribe the guard, burn the ledger, marry into the family you were sent to rob. A graphics engine supports the actions its animators built. Prose supports the actions you can describe.
The old cost of that freedom was authorship. Somebody had to have written the outcome you were reaching for, and if they hadn't, the game shrugged. An AI Game Master removes that ceiling, which is why the genre is livelier now than it has been in years. The new cost is continuity, and that is a solvable engineering problem. It is the one Auferet is built around, and you can test it free before believing anyone's claims, ours included.
FAQ
Text RPGs, answered
What is a text RPG?
A role-playing game played entirely in writing: the game describes the world in prose, and you act by typing what your character does. There are no graphics to render, so the world can be anything the words can hold. The genre runs from the multiplayer MUDs of the 1980s and 90s to modern AI-run games where a Game Master model narrates, tracks your character, and reacts to whatever you try.
Are text RPGs free to play?
Many are, and Auferet is. You get 10 free credits every day, and the free tier includes the full memory system, so you can run a real campaign before deciding whether to pay. Unlimited actions start at $10 per month.
Do I need to download anything?
Not for Auferet. It runs in any modern browser on desktop or phone, and there is an Android app if you prefer one. Classic entries in the genre sometimes need a client program, but a browser is enough here.
Can I play a text RPG with friends?
Yes. Auferet supports multiplayer with four ways to run a group: host-only input, turn-based play, free-for-all, and shared worlds where each player gets their own Game Master thread inside one setting, with a shared event log keeping every thread consistent. Nobody waits on anyone else's turn in a shared world.
Does a text RPG have real rules and dice?
It can. Auferet plays freeform by default, where you type anything and the Game Master narrates. If you want structure, dedicated 5e and Pathfinder 2e modes add character sheets, dice rolls, and system rules, and you can build a custom game mode with its own mechanics.
How is an AI text RPG different from a MUD or a parser game?
A MUD is a shared, hand-built world with fixed commands and other players in it. A parser game is a solo puzzle box where a designer wrote every room and response in advance. An AI text RPG generates the world as you play: it understands plain language instead of set verbs, and the story bends to what you actually do. The catch is continuity, which is why the memory system matters more than anything else in this kind of game.
Can I play a text RPG on my phone?
Yes. Auferet runs in a phone browser with no install, and there is an Android app. Text plays well on small screens, since reading and typing are the whole interface.
