A real session, recorded

This is what a turn looks like

The wind howls against the iron railing of the gallery, but the roar of the surf is louder as the supply boat bumps rhythmically against the dock. You stand on the slick stone, holding the flickering lantern high to illuminate the spray, watching the captain hurriedly toss your crates onto the slippery wood.

> I ask her name and watch her face while she answers.

You hold the lantern steady, its golden light catching the harsh angles of her face as she lowers her hood. Her eyes are tired but unblinking, reflecting the storm-tossed sea behind you.

> I check the lamp room, then bar the door at the bottom of the stairs before the storm hits.

The lamp room is in perfect order, the great glass lens polished and waiting for the night’s work. You descend the spiral stairs quickly, your boots echoing against the cold stone, and heave the heavy iron bar into place across the oak door just as a violent gust slams against the exterior, vibrating the entire structure.

Recorded on 2026-09-28 on the free-tier model: a fresh account, the first line "I'm the lighthouse keeper on a rock three miles from shore, and tonight the supply boat brought a passenger who is not on the manifest.", then the two actions above typed in. The AI named the story "Stranger at the Lighthouse Gate". The Game Master's lines are cut to their first two sentences here; the whole exchange, every word, is published as a JSON file.

An AI story game is a game where you play a character inside a story the AI writes as you go. You type what your character says or does, in plain language: "ask her where she got the watch," "take the lamp and go down to the cellar," "tell the council it was me." The AI writes the next scene, the people in it, what they say back and what changes because of you. There is no script to follow and no list of choices to pick from. The plot is generated around your decisions, one turn at a time.

That is what separates it from asking an AI to write you a story. A prompt like that hands you a finished piece of text. A story game puts you inside the text, with a role, stakes and other characters who react to you. It is closer to a tabletop session with a game master than to a writing tool, which is why the ones worth playing are judged on one thing: whether the story still makes sense an hour in.

What a good one gives you

What to expect from an AI story game

Your character, your story

Describe who you are in a sentence, or pick a first line above. Everything after that is written around what you choose to do.

The plot answers you

Lie to someone and they may find out. Leave a door open and something may come through it. The story reacts instead of running on rails.

Characters who remember

Auferet tracks the people and places in your story in structured libraries, so a character you crossed in scene three still holds it against you in scene thirty.

Your own setting

Bring a world you already have. Upload notes or a worldbook as PDF or text and the AI reads them and plays inside your canon.

Any genre, or none

Fantasy, mystery, science fiction, horror, a family drama at a funeral. The opening line sets the tone; the AI writes the rest to match. Eighteen ready-made openings are on the AI RPG prompts page.

Free to start

You should be able to test the memory before you pay. Auferet's free tier includes the full memory system, 10 free daily credits, in your browser. See how the best AI RPGs compare on memory.

Why memory is the deciding factor

A story game lives or dies on continuity

Most AI story games feed the model one fixed window of recent text each turn. That works for an opening, but once your story outgrows the window the oldest details fall out: a character's name, a promise your character made, the reason you left town in the first place. The game keeps writing confidently, just wrong, and that is the moment a story game stops being a story.

That is measurable, so we measured it. Five facts were planted in the first turns of a story on the free model and asked about at turn 20, 40 and 60: once with only recent conversation to read, the way most AI story games work, and once with persistent memory, the way Auferet works.

Asked atRecent conversation onlyPersistent memory
Turn 203 of 5 facts5 of 5 facts
Turn 401 of 5 facts5 of 5 facts
Turn 601 of 5 facts5 of 5 facts

Run on 2026-08-22 and again on 2026-08-27: both runs fell to 1 of 5 by turn 40 on recent conversation and held 5 of 5 with memory. Every question and raw answer is in the result file; the method is on the benchmark page, and how the memory works explains what it stores. It also reads your uploaded lore.

FAQ

AI story games, answered

What is an AI story game?

A game where you play a character inside a story the AI writes as you go. You type what your character says or does, and the AI writes the next scene, the people in it and how they react. There is no script and no fixed list of choices.

Is an AI story game the same as asking an AI to write a story?

No. Asking an AI to write a story hands you a finished piece of text from a prompt. A story game puts you inside the story with a role, stakes and other characters who respond to you, one turn at a time.

Is there a free AI story game?

Yes. Auferet is free, with 10 daily credits to claim, and the free tier includes the full memory system. It runs in your browser; unlimited actions start at $10/mo.

Can I play an AI story game online without downloading anything?

Yes. Auferet runs in the browser on desktop and phone, and there is an Android app if you want it on your home screen. A story you start in one place continues in the other.

What kind of stories can I play?

Any. Describe the opening in a sentence, fantasy, mystery, science fiction, horror, drama, or something with no genre at all, and the AI builds the scene from it. Ready-made openings are on the AI RPG prompts page.

Does the AI remember the story?

Auferet does. It keeps the recent scenes active, holds characters, places and events in dedicated libraries, and turns the whole story into a searchable record, so a long story keeps its continuity instead of drifting.

Can I bring my own characters and world?

Yes. Describe them in the opening, or upload notes or a worldbook as PDF or text and the AI plays inside that canon.
